A CREWE charity for the visually impaired has received a windfall to run a project to help its members resume activities after the pandemic.

IRIS Vision is sharing a cash pot of over £22,000 in grants made to 10 community organisations to support their work with the Crewe community.

The £2,500 grant awarded by Crewe Town Council for a post-Covid recovery project will enable IRIS to offer social activities aimed at restoring the confidence and self-esteem of its service users based at the charity's premises in Chapel Street.

The town council says the charity has been "particularly badly affected by Covid".

"Many visually impaired people have found the Covid restrictions to be particularly onerous and have lost self-confidence and independence, having an adverse impact on both their mental health and their capacity to remain self-sufficient," it says.

"The project is intended to rebuild that confidence, allowing them to move back safely and confidently into the post-Covid community."

The charity was among those groups successful in making submissions in the latest round of the council's Community Grant Scheme.

The other nine awards were made to:

Friends for Leisure Youth Group - £1,520.57 awarded to help support its work with young people with lifelong disabilities.

Parkinson's UK (Crewe & District) - £2,500 for support for people and families living with Parkinson's.

Motherwell CIO Advocacy for Women and Girls – £1,850 to fund a peer support group.

South Cheshire Youth League - £1,960 to pay for match facilities and support youth football.

Pure Insight - £2,500 to support Crewe care leavers.

South Cheshire Concert Band - £1,700 to buy a bass clarinet.

Community of Yours - £2,485 for sports and wellbeing enrichment.

Thrive Cheshire - £2,500 to pay for accommodation rental costs.

Child Safety Media Crucial Crewe - £2,500 for a child safety project.

The town council scheme is open for applications throughout the year and quarterly submission deadlines are considered by its community plan committee.

The next deadline for applications is Sunday, December 19 followed by Sunday, February 20, 2022.
