Crewe Alexandra FC's captain is likely to be ruled out the for rest of season with a serious ankle injury, after limping off in The Railwaymen's last match.

The 24-year-old, who has scored two goals in all competitions this season, was seen trying to run off his injury on the sidelines but couldn't continue.

Luke Offord came through the academy ranks at Crewe and has made 170 appearances for the club (Crewe Alex).

Manager, Lee Bell, told Crewe Alexandra's website: "Unfortunately, it's not good news.

"We thought he might have broken something but he hasn't. However, he's done severe damage to ligaments.

"He will see a specialist and he will likely need surgery.

"I spoke to him last night and advised him on what I would do in his situation, looking at his career going forward.

"It's a bitter blow because there hasn't been many better players in this league than Luke Offord this season.

Crewe Alex manager, Lee Bell, has labelled Luke Offord's ankle ligament injury as a 'bitter blow' (Crewe Alex).

"He will be a big miss; he is our captain. I'm really gutted for Luke because it looks like he will miss the rest of the season."

Crewe, who are currently fourth, travel to face Notts County at Meadow Lane on Saturday 24 February (3pm).
