Crewe Alex knock out Championship side in Carabao Cup shock
Crewe Alexandra FC knocked out a Championship side in a Carabao Cup first round shock, following a penalty shootout victory.
The Railwaymen defeated Sunderland A.F.C. 5-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw at Stadium of Light.
On-loan Liverpool goalkeeper, Harvey Davies, 19, saved Pierre Ekwah's kick, with all five Alex players scoring from the spot.
Jamie Nevitt, Chris Long, Rio Adebisi, Joel Tabiner and Ryan Cooney all bulged the net, making it Crewe's first victory over The Black Cats since a Carling Cup win in 2004.
Crewe took the lead in the side's 16th ever encounter, with captain Luke Offord emphatically heading in Joel Tabiner's first-half stoppage time corner (45+1).
16-year-old Sunderland midfielder, Chris Rigg, levelled the match on 64 minutes when Crewe failed to clear their lines, netting from inside the penalty area.
Crewe held firm for the remainder of the match, with Davies making a top save to deny Bradley Dack's lob deep into injury time.
Delighted with the victory, first-team manager, Lee Bell, said: "I thought the players were excellent.
"It was a real team effort from a group of lads who are all in it together and want to go in the right direction.
"Everyone put a shift in and they had to do that because Sunderland are a good side.
"We looked a really organised team and showed real courage when we had the ball.
"It shows we are a good team and it will bring us closer together, and give us positives and belief going forward into the season.
"It was a good night and I hope everyone enjoyed it. We didn't want to come here to just make up the numbers - the players took on the information we gave them brilliantly."
As a token of their appreciation, Crewe's board of directors have promised to cover the match ticket cost of every Alex fan who attended the cup victory.
Supporters who wish to take advantage of this gesture must do so before 5pm on Friday 11 August, with proof of purchase required.
On the penalty shootout, winning goalkeeper, Davies, added: "I just had to try and go where I thought they might go and I got lucky.
"It was a long trip for our supporters, we were made up to see them come here. There were quite a lot of them too. We are really happy for them.
"We are in the hat for the next round, so we will see who we get."
The Carabao Cup second round draw takes place after the result of the Burton vs Leicester match on Sky Sports (August 9), around 10pm.
