Crewe Alex assistant manager leaves club after 28 years to join local Championship side
Crewe Alexandra's assistant manager has left the club after 28 years - with the former boss and player set to join a local Championship club's backroom team.
On Monday 19 June, Crewe confirmed, Alex Morris, had officially left the club after accepting the offer of a "prominent role at a Championship club."
Morris is set to be a part of Alex Neil's backroom team at Stoke City, working closely between the under-21s and the first-team set-up.
The 40-year-old, who Crewe joined at 12, progressed through the club's academy ranks and spent several years as part of the first-team squad.
Morris was forced to retire due to injury, but forged a new career as a coach at the club.
The former midfielder progressed from teaching youngsters in Crewe's academy to leading the Under-18s and U21s.
In April 2022, Morris became Crewe Alexandra's first-team manager - succeeding David Artell.
In November 2022, Morris stepped down as Crewe Alexandra manager "for compassionate reasons,' swapping roles with Lee Bell to become the Alex's assistant boss.
On Tuesday 20 June, Morris addressed former teammates, colleagues, and supporters - releasing a statement on his departure from the club.
Morris told Crewe's website: "Crewe Alexandra is special and unique for many reasons – none more so than the people who work within it, and the supporters who follow it.
"Loyalty is something I value very highly in life. It's something I have given to this club, and the club has given back to me.
"I'm really grateful for the trust that has been placed in me and enabled me to move from being a player to having now fulfilled every coaching and management role. I'm proud of that.
"I've had some fantastic times and enjoyed every minute. In particular, seeing players I coached from the age of six come through and bring success to the club was so fulfilling. I will always treasure the fond memories I have.
"I always knew it would take an extraordinary opportunity to persuade me to leave. It is a huge wrench because I've spent almost three-quarters of my life here.
"But you have to strive for new challenges, and one has come along that I cannot turn down."
Crewe Alexandra paid tribute to Morris, saying they were "proud of all he has achieved" with the club.
A statement added: "Though it is naturally disappointing to lose a coach and person of Alex's calibre, we are proud of all he has achieved.
"And Alex's journey once again reflects the success of our unique pathway for players and coaches to progress.
"Everybody at Crewe Alexandra would like to wish Alex and his family all the very best for the future."
