A Crewe convenience store hit with a zero-star food hygiene rating twice in 18 months, has temporarily closed.

Manor Way Convenience Store, Manor Way, shut this August, two months after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) rated it zero for its hygienic food handling.

A notice on its pulled down shutters reads: "Dear customers, we are temporarily closed. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

A food safety officer from Cheshire East Council inspected the Crewe shop on May 29 to check it was following food hygiene law and ensuring the food sold was safe to eat.

The off-licence was rated two-star for cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building and its management of food safety, with the hygienic food handling pulling its rating down to the lowest grading.

Local residents have hit out at Manor Way Convenience Store, with some labelling it 'horrible,' 'dirty,' and 'smelly,' reporting they had been sold out-of-date produce.

One Nub News reader said: "Not surprised in the slightest. Everything bought from there recently is out-of-date. The shop is cluttered with all sorts.

"It is a horrible shop. Bought a Wrights meat and potato pie from there, but was off date by five days.

"Took it back and they said 'it had just come out of the freezer' so I could eat it."

Another Crewe resident said: "Dirty smelly place. Byron and Hazel [previous owners] are well missed."
