Crewe 1, Doncaster 1: Miller gives the Alex the slip in frustrating draw

Alex Morris wants his players to be more ruthless from winning positions to ensure Crewe's frustrating run doesn't leave the season in tatters.
A sixth draw, this time against a Doncaster side managed by Danny Schofield for the first time, was a poor outcome after an inspired first-half performance brought another goal for Courtney Baker-Richardson – his seventh in League Two – and an agile penalty save from Arthur Okonkwo.
But Donny's spotkick taker, George Miller, made amends for his miss with a 77th-minute leveller when he capitalised on a through ball after Okonkwo charged way too far off his line.
Rooted in mid table, having managed just one win in 10 games, trips to AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night and a first visit to Barrow's Holker Street in half a century next Saturday could be key in deciding which direction the 2022/23 campaign is going.
A side showing three changes - with Zac Williams, Tariq Uwakwe and Oli Finney drafted into a wing-back formation - were on the front foot for most of the first half.
Finney got things going with low shot which keeper Jonathan Mitchell held at his near post.
The positive start continued with a 14th-minute opener courtesy of some fine finishing from leading scorer Baker-Richardson. A precise cross from Tariq Uwakwe found the striker 12 yards out and he planted a firm header over Mitchell into the top corner.
Dan Agyei burst clear on the left and Mitchell had to tip over the attacker's explosive angled drive. Then Baker-Richardson directed a header the wrong side of the post from Joel Tabiner's cross when it seemed an easier chance than the one he had tucked away for the opener.
Doncaster edged back into the game and Kyle Knoyle lifted a difficult chance over at the far post after the wingback was played into space by Ben Close.
Harrison Biggins was then thwarted by a fine reaction save from Okonkwo with the keeper flinging himself across to push the midfielder's low strike around the post.
Baker-Richardson blotted his copybook when his raised hand connected with Adam Clayton's free kick. But Okonkwo rescued the situation keeping out Miller's 45th-minute penalty with a leg and enjoying some fortune when the striker lifted his follow-up header over.
The reprieve galvanised Crewe to press again after the restart when Mitchell pushed over Rio Adebisi's angled drive and then scrambled away efforts from Agyei and Tabiner.
But inexplicably, the momentum was lost and Donny edged back into contention, although without carrying a serious threat.
Clayton drove a free kick inches over, but the visitors' equaliser emerged out of nothing. Biggins slipped Miller clear and the Rovers frontman, who was a doubt before the game after hurting his back when slipping in the shower at home, made the most of Okonkwo's rush of blood.
The Arsenal loan keeper galloped out of goal and Miller slipped the ball past him and into an empty net.
Unless Crewe start turning draws like this one into wins then the season will also be slipping away into obscurity.
Boss Morris said: "We've drawn another game and we need to get back on a winning track. I'm hoping that it will look a lot different in a few weeks' time when we're in that situation and we'll go on and score two or three goals.
"If we perform and play like that then it's going to see us winning games.
"There was definitely a sense of anxiety and nervousness because we wanted to get that win.
"We're stuck in 13th place and we are not going to move forward unless we start to throw some wins together."
