A COUPLE returned to the South Cheshire hostelry which hosted their wedding breakfast so they could mark their 52nd anniversary.

More than half a century had passed since Jeff and June Stuthridge visited the White Lion at Weston, on their wedding day.

The couple took with them the bill receipt they received at that celebratory meal back in October 1969.

And they were amazed at the reaction triggered by their nostalgic return as White Lion staff members took it in turns to pass on best wishes at their table.

"We took our old receipt along from our wedding day, but little did we know what a wonderful reaction there would be," recalled Jeff

"Before long almost every one of the staff came to our table, which we found very warm and welcoming.

"Then the Roja wine we ordered was best we have ever tasted, the rib-eye steak was cooked to perfection and the vegetables a perfect companion to our plate."

And the couple added: "The constant friendly attention we received throughout the evening was exceptional, it was like being among family and friends."

White Lion General Manager Chris Johnson says he was delighted with his restaurant team's response to the surprise visit which ensured the Stuthridge's night was so memorable.

"It was delighted to hear how Jeff and June had returned to celebrate a fantastic life achievement with the bill from their original visit all those years ago," said Chris.

"It was a truly heart-warming story and I'm very proud of all the team who made them feel so welcome and ensured they had a wonderful evening - it was true hospitality at its purest."

With a menu full of Gastro pub classics the White Lion's 1652 Restaurant is the perfect venue for an anniversary meal. And with the winter nights setting in a table in front of the roaring fire is a great spot to enjoy a hearty meal.
