A retiring Cheshire police chief has donated £20,000 to a Crewe boxing club, in recognition of its work supporting young people and tackling anti-social behaviour.

Chief Constable, Mark Roberts, is retiring on Thursday 5 November, after 33 years of service.

Ahead of his retirement, he has donated £25,000 between two organisations closely supported by Cheshire Constabulary during his time in the role.

South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club has received £20,000, while the Museum of Policing in Cheshire has been given £5,000.

Founded by head coach Nathan Clarke in 2012, South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club provides a safe space for young people to exercise, learn new skills and develop discipline.

The Mirion Street club has also played an active role in helping to reduce anti-social behaviour in Crewe.

Cheshire Constabulary has supported the organisation since its formation, with Chief Constable Roberts attending the ground-breaking ceremony for its new site.

Mark Roberts said he had hoped to continue as Chief Constable through to 2028, but a decision to 'take the force in a different direction' was made by police and crime commissioner, Dan Price (Photo: Cheshire Police).

On Friday 30 October, Mr Roberts invited founder, Nathan Clarke, to the Cheshire Police Headquarters, where he surprised him with a £20,000 cheque.

Chief Constable Roberts said: "I am a firm believer we should always support local initiatives, especially when those behind them put so much effort into providing and maintaining safe spaces where members of our communities, and young people in particular, can come together, develop new skills and meet new people.

"I have seen the marvellous work of the club's team of volunteers first hand, and it is clear its presence has had an overwhelmingly positive effect in Crewe.

"It is so important we do everything we can to support these incredible people and the commitment they show in supporting their community.

"However, great projects like these cannot be run for free.

"With that in mind, I am really pleased to be able to present the team with this cheque for £20,000 as a contribution to this great club and to help see them into the next year."

The remaining £5,000 was presented to volunteers at the Museum of Policing in Cheshire during a retirement celebration in Warrington.

The donation will help restore a pastel sketch dating back to around 1887, depicting a historic scene on Buttermarket Street, Warrington.

The artwork features Samuel Hunt, former Chief Constable of Warrington Borough Police, and is displayed outside the museum at Charles Stuart House.

This funding will also help pay for a specialist frame to protect the artwork from light damage.

The donations come from the Police Property Fund, generated through the sale of eligible property that has come into police possession.

The money is then reinvested into local communities and organisations.

Mr Roberts said he was proud to see the museum grow from a small project started by retired officers in 2006 into a King's Award-winning registered charity.

Earlier this year, Mr Roberts said he had hoped to continue in his role through to 2028, but a decision to "take the force in a different direction" was made by police and crime commissioner, Dan Price.
