Councillors react to 'brilliant' new Crewe link road development
Councillors have reacted to the "brilliant" new Crewe link road development completed ahead of schedule last week, aiming to improve access to the town centre.
Flag Lane, from Bridle Road to Richard Moon Street, reopened on Thursday 3 August, after being closed since May 15 for the Flag Lane Link development.
The new road connects Dunwoody Way to Delamere Street via the new road connecting Flag Lane with Harrison Drive.
These completed works are part of a package of projects being supported by the government's Future High Streets Fund, following the council's successful bid for a total of £14.1 million of funding
Deputy leader and chair of Cheshire East Council's highways and transport committee, Cllr Craig Browne, said: "We are delighted to be completing these works ahead of schedule, enabling road users to access the town more safely during this holiday season.
"It was also very positive that in this instance, we were able to keep access for cyclists and pedestrians available throughout the works supporting active travel, though it is important to note that it's not always possible to do this for safety reasons."
There was also an upgrade to the zebra crossing, which is in place on Flag Lane.
Ward member for Crewe Central, Cllr Anthony Critchley, added: "It was great to be able to liaise closely with highways colleagues on this important project.
"Especially when it came to providing all the solutions regarding drainage and the lighting.
"As councillor Browne has already referenced, it was brilliant to see the active travel aspect of the project recognised properly as well."
New junction controls are currently being installed at the Wistaston Road, Edleston Road and Nantwich Road areas in another scheme supported by the Future High Streets Fund.
Further projects have also been approved in Crewe, including the Southern Gateway Pedestrian and Cycling Connectivity Scheme.
This will provide a new pedestrian and cycling link between High Street and the Crewe Lifestyle Centre, with works expected to commence in January 2024.
