Council responds to concerns over new crossings by busy roundabout in Crewe

Cheshire East Council has responded to concerns from local residents, surrounding new crossings installed next to a busy roundabout in Crewe.
On November 30, 2024, the council reopened Mill Street following works as part of the Southern Gateway Scheme, expected to be fully completed in "early" summer.
As part of these works, Mill Street was resurfaced, with the footpath under Mill Street bridge moved to one side of the road and widened.

Two new crossings, a zebra crossing (Mill Street), and a parallel crossing (Vernon Way), were put in place each side of Oak Street Roundabout.
Local residents have since bemoaned the new crossings, with some labelling them a "hazard."
One said: "Created two massive hazards for pedestrians with yet more crossings for pedestrians right on roundabouts.
"Could a representative from Cheshire East Council please comment and explain to us mere mortals here."
Cllr Brian Silvester, of Putting Crewe First, said: "The two new zebra crossings in Crewe, at the roundabout, at the junction of Mill Street and Vernon Way, are dangerous because they are far too close to the roundabout.
"Only last year, the zebra crossing further down Vernon Way, which was very near to the Earle Street roundabout, was moved further away from the roundabout because it was in the 'high risk' category for accidents and dangerous."

Chair of Cheshire East Council's highways and transport committee, Cllr Mark Goldsmith, said: "The location of the new crossing has been safety checked with an independent review.
"The crossing has been installed as part of the Southern Gateway project, which is part of a phased scheme funded by the government's Future High Street Fund, to improve the route for pedestrians and cyclists from the south of Crewe into the town centre.
"The Southern Gateway project is due for completion in the early part of this summer."
