Works to improve access to Crewe town centre will continue in June, as Cheshire East Council's Southern Gateway project gets underway.
The Southern Gateway works will improve the route for pedestrians and cyclists from the south of Crewe into the town centre from High Street to the Lifestyle Centre.
The works will also improve the link from Mill Street/Oak Street/Vernon Way to Forge Street.
Highways works will begin on Monday 10 June with the scheme due for completion in early 2025.
The work will require High Street to be partially closed in phases from Cross Street to Vernon Way while the construction works take place.
This is a project that is being funded by the Government's Future High Streets Fund programme.
The works that will take place include:
- Installation of a new shared cycleway/footway between High Street and Forge Street
- Improvements to the existing zebra crossing to upgrade to a parallel crossing between Vernon Way
- New street lighting, trees and shrubs and other features such as a rain garden between Forge Street and High Street
- Changes to the footpath arrangements underneath Mill Street bridge
- Widening of the footway on High Street
- Improvements to the roundabout on Oak Street/Vernon Way
- Installing improved signage
Updates on the scheme's progress will be provided through the council's highways Twitter account at @CECHighways and also through its corporate social media channels.
