Cheshire East Council has made one final heartfelt plea to the public - urging them to vote for Crewe to become the home of the Great British Railways.

Crewe is down to the final six locations to house the HQ for Great British Railways.

The public vote to help decide which location will be chosen ends this Monday (August 15).

Rail minister, Wendy Morton MP, with Cllr Craig Browne (left) and Cllr Sam Corcoran (right) - at her visit to Crewe in July (Cheshire East Council).

Leader of Cheshire East, Cllr Sam Corcoran and Deputy Leader, Cllr Craig Browne, believe winning the bid will provide huge benefits for Crewe and the entire borough.

Cllr Corcoran told Nub News: "Cheshire is known as a green county with beautiful countryside – people want to live and work here."

"With a six-way connectivity of the rail network, there is a skilled rail workforce and there are several suitable locations for the HQ building close to the railway station.

"Crewe is a railway town - it was formed around the railways at a point where three separate rail lines intersect.

Crewe is the last town and the last North West location in the running for GBR (Ryan Parker).

"There is strong public support for the bid submitted by Cheshire East Council for Crewe to be the location for the new HQ.

"The technical strength of the bid has been recognised as Crewe is one of only six shortlisted locations."

The Cheshire East leader believes winning the bid will provide hundreds of 'good' jobs for Crewe, Cheshire East and the North West.

Cllr Corcoran added: "Crewe is up against much larger places. We really need everyone in the region to vote for Crewe if we are to win the public vote."

The public vote for Crewe to become the headquarters of Great British Railways end this Monday - August 15 (Ryan Parker).

It is in competition with Birmingham, Derby, Doncaster, Newcastle and York.

Cheshire East Council deputy leader, Cllr Craig Browne, believed that despite all of Crewe's competition - the Cheshire town stands the strongest.

Cllr Browne told Nub News: All the competing towns are going to be referring to rail heritage. None of them have 360-degree connectivity like crewe.

"Crewe really is at the heart of the UK's rail network. The HQ would deliver investment and jobs to the area.

Deputy leader of Cheshire East Council, Cllr Craig Browne (Cheshire East Council).

"We have ambitious regeneration plans for Crewe. We are currently in the process of building the Royal Arcade and bus station.

'This HQ would give businesses the confidence to invest more in Crewe.

"We also need to remember HS2 will bring a huge amount of benefits to the town.

"Except for Birmingham, Crewe is the only HQ bidding location with a planned HS2 station."

A final decision on the location for the GBR HQ will be made later this year (Ben Wye).
