CHESHIRE East Council is investigating subsidence claims on a Crewe street.

But the authority says it cannot comment specifically about a series of complaints about overgrowing trees which Nub News reported are causing significant structural damage to properties on Gainsborough Road.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "We are investigating a number of complaints regarding trees in Gainsborough Road. Owing to the nature of the investigation we are unable to comment further."

At least six householders along the tree-lined street are understood to have taken out claims against the council to cover the cost of repair work.

One of them, Dave Woolrich, highlighted numerous cracks in the walls and ceilings, which has meant he has abandoned decorating his three-bedroom home of 15 years.

Bay window frontages are also said to have been affected and the root growth has lifted the concrete on pavements outside their homes.

Mr Woolrich says he has yet to hear back about the claim he made more than three years ago.

Residents are calling on the council's highways department to properly maintain the trees and consider "pollarding" them as has been done in at least one nearby street in Crewe in the past.
