Contingency plans have been put forward for an angling club in Crewe to be converted back into four townhouses if it were to close.

Crewe Amalgamated Anglers Club was previously four houses, numbered three to nine, on Beech Street.

The club is planned to remain open for the foreseeable future, with the proposed residential development a backup plan if it were to close, leaving the building empty.

A design and access statement submitted by Ian Boone, on behalf of applicant, Mr N Singh, says: "This action has been brought about [by] diminishing numbers of members, mainly through natural reasons, making the club unviable for modern trading.

"There are many other public houses in the immediate area, so the disruption to their social life should be minimised, the active fishing members having moved onto one of the many other fishing clubs in Crewe, catering for their lifestyle and age group, with a varied selection of waters to fish."

The document says it is not clear when the houses were converted into a club, although the club is known to have been on the site in 1961.

It continues: "The proposed conversion will provide affordable housing aimed at the rental market or first-time buyer."

The application is being opposed by an objector on behalf of a nearby dental practice because the proposal refers to a 'gated and locked alley' for pedestrian access.

Crewe Amalgamated Anglers Club is known to have been operating on Beech Street since at least 1961 (Nub News).

The objector states: "The side alley to the development is shared with the dental practice. It is essential that it is kept clear for escape purposes.

"It must not be locked and must be kept clear."

The last date for submitting comments on the application is Friday 16 May, with a targe decision date of Monday 2 June.
