Completion of new Crewe walking and cycling scheme pushed back

The completion of a new walking and cycling scheme in Crewe has been pushed back, with the project costing more than budgeted.

The Mill Street Corridor got underway on 23 June, 2025, one of nine projects being supported by the government's Towns Fund and Crewe's allocation of up to £22.9m of funding.

Initially targeted for a 30-week turnaround, the scheme includes the installation of a new shared cycleway/footway, new street lighting, improved signage and new trees.

The Mill Street Corridor also includes the installation of a small park, significant vegetation and a new surface water drainage system.

Public space improvements run along Nantwich Road, Pedley Street and Railway Street, cutting through Waverley Court and Wesley Place.

It is understood phase 2a of the Mill Street Corridor has cost significantly more than planned, due to the discovery of voids when carrying out works (Photo: Ryan Parker).

From there it runs north along Mill Street, towards the town centre, connecting up with the completed Southern Gateway Link.

Much of the project has now been completed, as shown by the latest Nub News photos.

It is understood phase 2a of the project has cost significantly more than planned, due to the discovery of voids when carrying out works.

Due to this, it is likely there will be insufficient funds to deliver phase 2b, with Cheshire East looking at ways to deliver some improvements to this part of the route.

The completion of major works around Herdman Street and Pedley Street are now targeted for completion by May 30, with the reopening of Railway Street pushed back to July 21.

Chair of Cheshire East Council's economy and growth committee, Cllr Mick Warren, told Nub News: "We remain committed to delivering improved walking and cycling links between Crewe Railway Station and the town centre and phase one of our Mill Street Corridor Scheme has already been completed.

"This work is supported by Government funding through the Towns Fund and is a Crewe Town Board project.

"Phase 2a is set to complete in May this year, subject to final planning conditions being met.

"Traffic management for this phase has been removed, and we are pleased to have already received positive feedback from local residents about the improvements delivered so far.

"Phase 2a has cost significantly more than originally budgeted, largely due to the unexpected discovery of substantial voids beneath the road.

"These required extra engineering works and extended the construction timetable. It means the remaining funding available cannot deliver all the works originally planned for the next section of the route.

"We are continuing to explore funding and delivery options to deliver further improvements and will provide further updates as soon as more information is available."

Retired08 takes things too seriously, just because those words appear here it doesn't mean Cllr. Warrne said them, wrote them or even knew about them until it was published. Council (and police) press releases are written by people authorised to put words into other peoples mouths. In this case the voids were announced last year as a the reason work came to a grinding halt - and were reported on this website. At that point the scheme was UK Governemnt Funded and being run by the Crewe Town Board (using some privatised CEC Highways staff and according to the sign in Mill St, Taylor Woodrow as main contractor). As PCornes almost said, many "people from Crewe" knew what had been there until the 60/70's and could have guessed there would have cellars. But "people from Crewe" are never listened to be by those from elsewhere that do work like this, many of whom weren't even born when the original builings were demolished, becase we tend not to have degrees and they do, (often in something irrelevant and from a micky mouse university that used to be the polythechnic of the-back-of-beyond) so they feel they know better.

The minutes of the Crewe Town Board hint at an attempt to hold the contractor liable (presumably for not doing the homework PCornes mentioned) but it looks like they have given up getting them to finish the job at the contract price , or of getting the UK Government to cough up even more, so they went begging to CEC at which point it dropped on Cllr Warren, who also isn't from Crewe. Could I suggest that somebody actually tells the people from Crewe exactly what the outstanding Phase 2B will give us (because Phases 1 and 2a were hardly worth the hassle) and let us decide whether we need anyone to pay extra for it??!

As mentioned by Retired08 in his comment.
There were public houses along Mill street that were demolished in the 1960s ,
Neptune , The Engine house,
These must of had cellars in the day also the Houses must of had cellars IE for the likes of coal etc.
Surely homework has not been taken into account here to establish the previous land and ground structure.

Cllr Warren mentions substantial voids beneath the roads. There has only been patching of pot holes on the road, not any other work. I think he is referring to the old demolished properties basements in the area of the path/cycleway. CEC don't seem to be able to be accurate with their statements.

Just what was wrong with the previous walking route via Waverley court that a bit of Tlc would suffice, and as for the Pedley/Weston plans if ever money is found heaven help the area.

The scheme that nobody asked for (well nobody who would logically use it) and which mostly replaced a walking route that has existed for decades, half of which was upgraded when Lidl was built. Not actually run by CEC due to some dubious undermining of democracy in the days of Boris Johnson when the unelected Crewe Town Board was set up to bypass councillors with their very misleading website address https://weareallcrewe.co.uk/ - they are not all from Crewe and most of Crewe has never heard of them. Which is probably why councillors could not get sense out of what was happening, and mostly not happening, with the temporary traffic lights in Mill St.

What worries me is mention of Phase 2B if Phase 2A gets it to Pedley Street. What was 2B supposed to be? There was a proposed further stage from Pedley St to Weston Road which would have cost a massive amount of money and would have closed vehicle access to the station front but the government drew the line at funding something that stupid and nobody else had that much cash to throw around.
