Cheshire East Council has confirmed it plans to "enhance" Crewe town centre wasteland subject to funding, with discussions for 'meanwhile uses' ongoing.

In November 2023, the council scrapped plans for phase two of Crewe's Royal Arcade scheme - a mixed-use development comprising leisure facilities such as a cinema, together with shops and restaurants.

Cheshire East's economy and growth committee voted unanimously for the site to be used for 'meanwhile uses.'

Phase one of the Royal Arcade project, boasting a new 10-bay bus station and 390-space multi-storey car park, was officially completed in July (Ryan Parker).

This could include, a children's play area, temporary go-karting track, a trampoline park, pop-up cinema or space for traders to sell food and drink and more.

Following the completion of phase one, the land now earmarked for 'meanwhile uses' has been left with weeds growing for the past six months.

Cheshire East has since confirmed to Nub News it hopes to landscape the wasteland with plants and greenery this spring.

Deputy leader of Cheshire East Council and chair of the economy and growth committee, Cllr Michael Gorman, told Nub News: "The council continues to explore 'meanwhile uses' for the remainder of the Royal Arcade development site, which borders Victoria Street and Queensway.

"Discussions with third parties about this are ongoing and we hope to provide an update in early 2025.

"Subject to funding and as we head into spring and temperatures improve, we plan to enhance the space with landscaping and by introducing plants and other greenery.

"Cheshire East Council remains committed to the regeneration of Crewe town centre by encouraging investment in housing, retail, leisure and infrastructure."

The council continues to explore alternative funding opportunities for the Royal Arcade as originally proposed, reviewing options for the longer-term development of the site.
