Charity using old Crewe uni buildings for short-term accommodation
By Ryan Parker 26th Apr 2026
YMCA Cheshire has confirmed it is using old Crewe university buildings located behind the main campus for short-term accommodation, reducing homelessness locally.
Opened in 2025, YMCA's Valley Brook Campus is located behind Apollo Buckingham Health Sciences Campus, off Crewe Green Road.
This new initiative, supporting 120 people thus far, has seen three disused student housing blocks converted into a 53-unit supported accommodation facility.
Since opening, 38 residents at Valley Brook Campus have been "successfully transitioned" into stable accommodation, with four residents securing employment, re-entering the workforce.
Future phases at the campus include dedicated wings for care leavers and processed refugees, which YMCA says ensures "those at a crossroads in their lives have a safe, stable place to call home."
YMCA Cheshire has also confirmed it is not using accommodation within Booth Hall, used by Apollo Buckingham Health Sciences Campus.
The 800-room accommodation complex on Beswick Drive, continues to be used by the university.
On 21 April, The Home Office confirmed in writing neither Valley Brook Campus nor Booth Hall are being used "for initial, contingency, or dispersal accommodation" for asylum seekers.

CEO, Mark Hills, told Nub News: "YMCA Cheshire is delivering its contracted Rough Sleeping Prevention Service at the Valley Brook Campus, alongside our wider homelessness prevention work.
"YMCA Cheshire is not using accommodation within Booth Hall itself. Instead, we are utilising older accommodation blocks located behind the main university campus.
"This temporary accommodation forms part of our broader work supporting individuals who are at risk of homelessness or would otherwise be rough sleeping.
"The service provides safe, short-term accommodation alongside appropriate support to help people move towards longer-term housing solutions.
"Our priority remains working collaboratively with local partners to prevent homelessness and ensure that vulnerable individuals can access the support they need."
