CCTV will be installed at Crewe's new multi-storey car park and around the site - amid residents' concerns about late night safety for lone drivers.

The issue has been raised by many residents over the past couple of years since the car park plan was first mooted.

With the new building well under way, some Crewe residents have taken to social media to raise their concerns about safety.

Cheshire East Council has confirmed Crewe's multi-storey car park constructed decks have 'purposely' been designed to slope towards the central spine - for 'cost-efficient' drainage reasons (Ryan Parker).

Not only are they worried about security at the new multi-storey itself but also – with so many existing car parks scheduled to close – some people are worried about the distance across town to get back to their cars at night.

One woman posted on Facebook: "I know there are far worse places than Crewe, but I wouldn't want to park in a multi-storey and walk across to the lifestyle centre in the dark.

"Completely understand the logic behind the multi-storey, but not with regards to the location of the lifestyle centre and then to remove the designated parking."

Another woman raised concerns about going into the multi-storey alone late at night after work, while a couple of others posted they will be shopping elsewhere and avoid Crewe if this becomes the only town centre car park.

Cheshire East has confirmed public safety is paramount.

Crewe Multi-Storey Car Park is currently being constructed (Jordan Ryan).

Deputy leader and chair of the highways and transport committee, Craig Browne, said: "We take the matter of public safety very seriously.

"We absolutely understand why people may have concerns about accessing facilities, such as this, late at night and once it is dark.

"We have of course taken this into consideration during the development of plans for Crewe's new multi-storey car park.

"The car park's design complies with industry best practice and a number of security measures are being incorporated, which we hope will also offer reassurance to those using the facility.

"Measures include CCTV across the site including at lobby areas – which will be monitored – as well as ensuring all areas of the car park are well illuminated.

Cllr Craig Browne said the multi-storey car park will provide a more modern, safer, and better-quality facility for people visiting Crewe (Cheshire East Council).

"There will be restricted access at the pedestrian entrances to only those who have a parking ticket and are returning to their vehicle."

Cllr Browne said the 450-space multi-storey car park will provide a more modern, safer, and better-quality facility for people visiting the town.

He believes the development has the capacity needed to allow the council to free-up some of the current, older and less secure, surface car parks.

Cllr Browne added: "This will enable the council to move forward with other development projects that will help strengthen the town centre by creating more active uses and attracting more people and investment."

The multi-storey car park, which will include electric vehicle charging points, will replace some of the surface car parks.

Lyceum Square is already closed for the new LY2 development - but disabled parking remains.

The Civic Centre car park – will close later this year as works progress on the new history centre.

Once redeveloped more than 50 spaces will be lost - leaving 31 available.

Oak Street Car Park is also set to be re-developed for the new Youth Zone - subject to planning permission.

Crewe's new multi-storey car park is on track to be completed by December 2023 - along with a new bus interchange.
