Carers at a Crewe dementia specialist have scooped accolades at its annual Champion Awards, celebrating exceptional performance in the company.

Colleagues Dean Pepper, Jessica Butler and Duke Household team, alongside volunteer Cavell Meakin and admiral nurse, Caroline Clifton, were all recognised for supporting older people to live an active and fulfilling later life.

Winners from the Brookhouse Drive village and its corresponding home care service, Belong at Home, collected their trophies from colleagues from across the region at the Hallé St Peter's venue in Manchester.

Dean Pepper, a lead senior support worker, was named 'Leader of the Year' for his work developing colleagues into a confident, skilled group, who place focus on individualised care.

Described as having formed a 'strong professional relationship with his team, who fully respect him', his adaptable approach in ensuring his colleagues reach their full potential made a positive impression on judges.

'Team of the Year' was taken home by Duke Household, for making it their priority to build close bonds with customers to achieve a sense of family.

Judges also highlighted their passion, dedication and the clear training and development of support workers to create a fantastic service, particularly those receiving end-of-life care.

For Cavell Meakin, a desire to continue a 46-year career helping others has been realised with the former nurse winning the 'Volunteer Award' for her work ethic.

In 2023, Belong picked up national accolades at the Great British Care Awards, LaingBuisson Awards and The Dementia Care Awards (Ryan Parker).

Judges summarised Cavell as being 'dedicated to people's emotional wellbeing and really getting to know their interests and keeping these interests in their lives.'

Heading up Belong Crewe's experience team, Jessica Butler, picked up the 'Innovation Award' for creating B's Dementia Cafe, the complimentary support service open to non-residents and their carers in need of guidance.

After securing the backing of Cheshire East Council's Creating Dementia Friendly Crewe scheme, the fortnightly programme has helped numerous people locally and has since been rolled out across the organisation.

The dementia cafe's co-leader, admiral nurse, Caroline Clifton, was named 'Mentor of the Year' for her role in developing colleagues' skills in supporting residents with dementia.

Recruitment manager, Lisa Armstrong, won the 'Central Services Award' for successfully implementing an enhanced recruitment platform, helping to engage the sector's very best talent to the organisation.

Judges described her communication skills as 'incredibly impressive', with her work coordinating T-Level students setting the sector up for future prosperity.

Winners were determined by a panel of independent judges who interviewed finalists chosen from nominations from customers, relatives and colleagues.

All were presented with a handmade trophy, designed by Belong customer, Beryl Cadman, as part of a creative competition for the special occasion.

Belong's chief executive, Martin Rix, told Nub News: "It has been another year of hard work and dedication from our teams and so we are pleased to give them the recognition they deserve.

"To all our finalists and winners: thank you and congratulations for making Belong the best place for our customers to live and for our colleagues to work."
