Call to revive HS2 rail link to Crewe generating up to £10bn

Industry leaders are urging the government to restore the planned high-speed rail connection from the West Midlands to Crewe, warning a failure to do so would undermine the benefits of HS2 and limit its economic potential.
On March 3, The High Speed Rail Group (HSRG) submitted revised proposals to the Treasury, calling for an "Euston-Crewe core" approach to HS2.
HSRG argue this latest HS2 plan would keep costs under control while delivering vital transport links.
They argue reconnecting Crewe to the high-speed network is essential for relieving pressure on the congested West Coast Main Line.

HSRG chair, Dyan Perry, said: "HS2 is at a crossroads. If delivered correctly, it will unlock national transport capacity, drive economic growth, and enhance regional connectivity.
"However, if cut short, the government risks wasting substantial investment and squandering the far-reaching benefits of high-speed rail."
Under HSRG's plan, Crewe would once again serve as a key hub, improving rail connections between London, the Midlands, and the North West.
The group also proposes a cost-effective Euston Station with a six-platform design, allowing future expansion while saving between £3bn and £4bn compared to previous estimates.
HSRG warns without Euston and the Crewe link, the value of an HS2 concession could be halved, reducing potential revenue to the Treasury.
They estimate a fully connected London–Birmingham–Crewe railway could generate between £7.5bn and £10bn, providing a significant return for taxpayers.

Mr Perry said: "The UK has already invested heavily in HS2, creating jobs, supply chains, and infrastructure expertise.
"By taking decisive action now, the fovernment can restore financial control and accelerate delivery, ensuring long-term growth and success."
With the Treasury's spending review approaching, HSRG is calling for urgent action to unfreeze the Crewe link and secure the future of high-speed rail in the UK.
