Family-run bakery chain, Chatwins, is committing to Crewe town centre with building work plans for a former unit, and is mulling over whether to relocate there.

This May, managing director of Chatwins, Edward Chatwin, submitted prior approval for a change of use to the upper two floors of 9 Earle Street to create two self-contained flats.

The applicant proposes the two-bedroom flats, which also include a lounge, shower room, kitchen area, hall, landing, and staircase to the left, would be accessed from a new door at the Earle Street unit.

Mr Chatwin has also put forward plans for a new shop door and Chatwins shopfront signage.

Currently operating three stores in Crewe, including 35 Victoria Street, Chatwins is "considering" relocating across the centre to Earle Street, but no final decision has yet been made.

Mr Edward Chatwin told Nub News: "We can confirm we have submitted a planning application to carry out building works to the property that we own on Earle Street.

"We are considering relocating from our shop on Victoria Street, however, no final decisions have been made, and there is currently no confirmed timescale for any changes.

"We remain committed to serving our customers in Crewe town centre and will provide updates as soon as we are in a position to do so."

The 112-year-old bakery chain recently closed its last North Staffordshire outlet in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The last date for submitting comments on the application is Wednesday 25 June, with a target decision date of Monday 14 July.
