AN appeal has been launched to restore Crewe Carnival to its "rightful" place in the town's calendar.

A Facebook page entitled 'The Peoples Carnival Of Crewe' is hoping to revive the spirit of the popular town festival which petered out a decade ago.

The organisers have boldly stated their intention to "create a new" carnival and have asked people to post their ideas as well as nostalgic pictures of carnivals past.

Crewe Carnival was a hugely popular event which saw thousands turn out to watch the procession of imaginative floats wend their way around town, complete with dancing troupes and marching bands.

The crowds then savoured a feast of entertainment well into the evening at Queens Park, which included stalls, musical acts, a fairground attraction and fireworks

Held over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the event once attracted Jason Donovan to its main stage in the mid-noughties.

But when restoration work at the park forced a temporary switch to the King George Playing Fields the event began to falter, with location and cost being cited as factors in its demise.

Now members of a group interested in reviving the event are planning a public meeting to gauge the level of support. They say the plan is to form a committee and approach Cheshire East Council, Crewe Town Council and local businesses and charities for help.

Have a look at some of the pictures the site has shared with us in the picture gallery above, as well as some historic carnival photographs from Crewe's early history.

Cheshire East Council has revived some of the carnival tradition in the Pride event which was held successfully in Queens Park in 2019 and will be staged virtually for a second year running later this month (Saturday, September 25) with a guest appearance from Handforth Parish Council fixer Jackie Weaver.
