Labour's Emily Thornberry visits Crewe in general election launch for constituency
The Labour Party's shadow attorney general for England and Wales, Emily Thornberry MP, visited Crewe on Tuesday 28 May, in a general election launch for the constituency.
Mrs Thornberry visited Apollo Buckingham Health Sciences Campus, Crewe Green Road, speaking alongside Crewe and Nantwich's Labour parliamentary candidate, Connor Naismith.
Elected as the Islington South and Finsbury Labour MP since 2005, Mrs Thornberry has worked in her current role since 2021.
The 63-year-old came to Crewe to back Mr Naismith's 2024 General Election campaign launch, aiming to turn Crewe and Nantwich red on Friday 5 July.
In parliament, Mrs Thornberry has campaigned against 90-days detention, and for abortion rights in Northern Ireland.
The shadow attorney general has served in the shadow ministerial teams of Ed Miliband, Jeremy Corbyn and now Keir Starmer.
Mrs Thornberry's previous shadow cabinet positions were as international trade secretary, foreign secretary, Brexit secretary, defence secretary and a first spell as shadow attorney general.
Following the general election launch, Mr Naismith told Nub News: "I am proud to launch my campaign to be the next Labour MP for Crewe and Nantwich.
"As a resident, I know that our community deserves better than the past 14 years of Tory decline."
"Over the next few weeks, I will set out my plans to change Crewe and Nantwich.
"I care about this community because its my community and that's why my priorities reflect what residents really care about.
"That means fighting to revitalise our high streets and support local businesses, taking back control of our public transport links, tackling crime and antisocial behaviour on our streets, fixing our local NHS services and making sure all our children get the best start in life."
"Together, we can change Crewe and Nantwich."
Leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer, told Nub News: "This is a chance to change Crewe and Nantwich with Labour.
"Over the course of the last four years, we have changed the Labour Party and returned it once more to the service of working people.
"All we ask now, humbly, is to do exactly the same for our country. And return Britain to the service of working people.
"A vote for Labour is a vote for economic and political stability, an end to Conservative chaos, and a long-term plan to rebuild Britain."
CEO of Apollo Buckingham, Dr Aswin Sayiram, spoke to Mr Naismith and Mrs Thornberry regarding "skills bootcamps" at the campus, as part of a government bid for out of work Britons.
These bootcamps aim to plug gaps in the labour market, previously filled by overseas workers.
Mr Sayiram said: "We will house the North West's job seeking population to allow them to learn new skills and find new employment."
Connor Naismith is running alongside Ben Fletcher (Conservative), Matthew Theobald (Liberal Democrats), Te Ata Brown (Green Party), Phil Lane (Workers Party), Matt Wood (Reform UK) and Brian Silvester (Putting Crewe and Nantwich First) for the constituency in the 2024 General Election.
