First words from new Labour MP Connor Naismith: 'There's lot's to be done, I can't wait to get started'

Connor Naismith took to the stage in Crewe Lifestyle Centre to give his victory speech after being elected as the Labour MP for Crewe and Nantwich in the early hours of Friday morning.

In his speech, he thanked both his wife Laura and his daughter, whom he claimed were "a constant pillar of support without which I would not be the person that I am."

He also thanked his volunteers, who were front row passionately applauding Naismith as his victory was announced, stating that he was eternally grateful for the effort that they had put in, "to build a better future for our friends, our families, and our neighbours".

Naismith then went on to criticise the past 14 years of Conservative government, in which Britain has experienced 4 different Prime Ministers. He stated:

"Voters have finally had their say, loud and clear. They have decidedly and conclusively turned the page on fourteen years of chaos, decline and failure to deliver on promises made. They have elected a Labour party who is laser focused on the priorities of ordinary families both in Crewe and Nantwich and up and down this country."

Naismith continued to promise, "Economic security, cheaper bills, safer streets, getting our NHS back on it's feet, secure borders and better opportunities for our children. It is now incumbent on my colleagues and I to give back to people that which fourteen years of conservative government has stolen from them."

After his election campaign speech, many reporters and photographers were crowded to get a glimpse of the first Labour MP for Crewe and Nantwich since Laura Smith lost her seat in 2019.

The new Labour MP told Nub News: "I'd like to thank the other candidates, on the whole it was a well-tempered campaign, run really well, and I'm delighted with the result."

"This is my home, I want to spend as much time as possible here addressing the issues that are really important to residents."

"I'm really keen to get stuck into my priorities that I've talked about during the campaign: to give proper attention to our high streets, local public services and public transport, making sure they run efficiently. There's lots to be done. I can't wait to get started."

Despite Connor Naismith's decisive victory, winning a majority of 9,727, his votes seem significantly lower than the amount that Kieran Mullan, ex-MP for Crewe and Nantwich, received when he won the vote in 2019.

In 2019, Mullan received 28,704 votes, while in the 2024 general election, Naismith received a substantially lower 20,837 votes. This could be explained by a surprisingly low turnout for Crewe and Nantwich at 60.2 per cent, with low enthusiasm for both Keir Starmer and Connor Naismith.

More realistically, Matt Wood, the candidate representing Reform UK, seems to have split both the Conservative and Labour vote, placing third in the race to be Crewe and Nantwich's new MP, with a total of 9,602, 20.3 per cent of the vote share.
