Swansway Motor Group responds to key automotive measures in the Autumn Budget
By Alasdair Perry 28th Nov 2025
This week's Autumn Budget included a number of policies set to shape how UK drivers buy, run and choose their next car.
Directors at Swansway Motor Group, Peter and David Smyth, have shared their thoughts on the announcements and what they could mean for motorists and businesses across the region.
On proposed EV pay per mile charging
Peter and David Smyth, Directors at Swansway Motor Group, said:
"While a pay per mile system for electric vehicles sounds fair on the surface, in reality it raises a lot of unanswered questions. It would rely heavily on drivers submitting accurate mileage and being completely honest, and there's still very little clarity on how this would actually be regulated or enforced in practice. Motorists need reassurance that any future system will be transparent, simple and fair to everyone."
Salary sacrifice and Benefit in Kind changes
Peter and David Smyth added:
"This change will have a significant financial impact on our family business. Based on our current usage, the Budget announcement around salary sacrifice and Benefit in Kind will cost Swansway Motor Group around half a million pounds per year. It's a sizeable increase, particularly at a time when the automotive industry is already under pressure from rising costs and changing consumer demand."
What the Budget means for drivers and local businesses
For everyday drivers, the measures in this year's Budget could influence the overall cost of running a car. Changes to fuel duty or new approaches to EV road pricing may mean some motorists see small but noticeable adjustments in their day to day spending.
For company car users, any updates to Benefit in Kind rates or salary sacrifice schemes could shape which models offer the best value. Many drivers rely on these incentives to keep monthly costs predictable, so greater clarity and long term consistency will be key.
For used car buyers, shifts in disposable income or running costs may affect the types of vehicles people look for. As always, clear advice and honest guidance will help customers make confident decisions that suit their lifestyles and budgets.
For local businesses, any changes to corporation tax, business rates or transport incentives could influence fleet planning and future investment. Support for green transport and infrastructure may also help organisations take further steps towards more sustainable travel.
Swansway Motor Group will continue to monitor the impact of these policies and work closely with customers and partners to help them navigate the evolving automotive landscape with confidence.
