Would you like to help grow a new forest, after you are gone?
Now you can thanks to Co-op Funeralcare Crewe, they have pledged to plant a tree for every funeral they arrange, partnering with search engine Ecosia.
Every time a funeral is carried out by Crewe Co-op Funeralcare, they will plant a tree, to represent the life led, and a new one that will come from it.
This forms part of a global regeneration and reforestation programme led by the search engine and comes at no extra cost to Crewe families who are saying goodbye to their loved ones.
This small step to help reverse the climate emergency is good for our planet, as trees sequester carbon dioxide, which contributes to rising temperatures on our planet.
Co-op Funeralcare Crewe is one of 18 homes selected to take part in the new tree planting initiative across Cheshire and South West England. It launched in November 2021 and hundreds of trees have been planted so far. A further roll out is expected this year.
While Co-op Funeralcare has been carbon neutral since 2011 – and all of its electricity comes from renewable sources – the UK's largest funeral provider also plays a central role in delivering the Co-op's pledge to achieve net zero status by 2040, ten years ahead of the Government's own ambition.
Trees create habitats for wildlife, protect water sources and prevent erosion.
They are also useful in preventing desertification, which is handy to know as many of the trees pledged to be planted by the Co-op Funeralcare and Ecosia could be in Africa.
A tree for your funeral could be planted across any of four continents.
Ecosia supports over 60 tree-planting projects in 30 different countries.
Some of these are: Peru, Brazil, Madagascar, Nicaragua, Haiti, Colombia, Spain, Morocco, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Indonesia.
To make sure the trees grow and survive, Ecosia has a dedicated Tree Team that works with local partners who are able to monitor planted trees on the ground.
As of December 2021, Ecosia claims to have planted more than 140 million trees since it was founded in 2009.
