CREWE are looking to add to their loan contingent after young Southampton full-back Kayne Ramsay arrived at the Mornflake Stadium today (Tuesday).

A season-long loan deal has been struck with the Premiership club which will see the 20-year-old right-sided defender on the books for the 2021/22 campaign.

Ramsay is Crewe's second arrival in the summer market after striker Chris Long joined on a permanent basis.

Boss Dave Artell has been closely examining the loan market to boost his summer recruitment with Crewe needing major reinforcement at the back after Olly Lancashire was released and Omar Beckles turned down a contract offer to sign for Leyton Orient.

The full-back berths are particularly sparse of experience and competition with key men Harry Pickering and Perry Ng also gone.

But Ramsay, who came through Chelsea's youth ranks before joining Southampton in 2017, can partly solve that conundrum and, like Pickering and Ng, he has a reputation for getting forward down the flank.

Ramsay has already made a couple of Premiership starts for the Saints, including a 9-0 mauling at Manchester United in February, although he gained useful experience in League One during a five-game loan spell at Shrewsbury in February last year.

Southampton's official web site stated: "The agreement will see the 20-year-old gain yet more first-team experience in the EFL, following a brief loan spell at Shrewsbury Town during the 2019/20 term."
