WORK is underway to repair a sinkhole which has left Flag Lane shut for through traffic for the last 12 days.

United Utilities staff were called in to assess the four-foot wide hole, which emerged late on Friday, July 10, after it became clear a sewer had collapsed.

Flag Lane has remained closed off between Wistaston Road and its junction with Lewis Street.

The hole was cordoned off last week and now UU engineers are at work on the road, although there is no estimate of when the work will be completed and the road reopened.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: "Our engineers are currently on site at Flag Lane fixing a collapsed sewer.

"The road has been temporarily closed so that we can safely carry out these essential repairs. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are working as quickly as we can to get everything back to normal as soon as possible."
