Work on new pedestrian crossing for 'concerning' 40mph road begins
Work has finally begun on a new local pedestrian crossing - following months of campaigning by local councillors, the local MP and residents.
Concerns were raised about the lack of a pedestrian crossing on Peter Destapleigh Way, at the exit from the Stapeley Water Gardens estate, Nantwich.
The road is a 40mph road with the exit largely concealed by hedging meaning neither drivers or pedestrians have advanced site of each other.
Nantwich South Cllrs, Peter Groves and Andrew Martin, alongside, Crewe and Nantwich MP, Dr Kieran Mullan, have been lobbying Cheshire East to act for more than a year.
They raised the issue directly with the Council Leader, Cllr Sam Corcoran.
After securing agreement in principle for the crossing, frustration has been growing at the increasing wait for the work to begin.
Visiting the site earlier this year, Cllr Groves, Cllr Martin and Dr Mullan, saw for themselves how traffic stopped and started irregularly while school children were crossing.
They later videoed this to show Cheshire East the dangerous reality of the situation and the need for urgent action.
Work on the crossing has now commenced - much to the relief of residents on the estate.
Cllr Peter Groves said: "As ward councillors we are glad to see action at last.
"Residents have rightly been pressing for this because like us they were concerned about safety for children crossing."
Cllr Andrew Martin said: "As a local resident I have been concerned about what might happen at this crossing.
"Peter and I are delighted that work has now begun, it can't happen soon enough."
The site for the new Nantwich crossing is less than a 10-minute drive from Crewe.
Councillors, local residents and the MP, hope there are more road safety investments to come within the Crewe and Nantwich area.
Dr Kieran Mullan MP added: "I know across the whole area there is more we need to do on road safety and speeding but this crossing worried me more than any other so I am very happy we have got a result.
"It has taken Peter, Andrew and I months and months of not letting this drop.
"I want to thank the residents that helped.
"I know a crossing here might be difficult for drivers with others so nearby, but children's safety has to come first and this was an accident waiting to happen."
