Upcoming four-week road closure announced in Crewe following October's traffic chaos

By Ryan Parker   12th Dec 2025

Another major road closure is heading for Crewe's Weston Road, just months after October's attempt ended in gridlock, angry motorists and an emergency shutdown by Cheshire East Council.

Contractor EuroGold has now issued formal notice the westbound section of Weston Road will be closed again from 12 January to 6 February 2026 for critical infrastructure works linked to developments off David Whitby Way.

The company says only one direction will shut, from the exit of Rookery Wood Farm roundabout leading on to Weston Road.

Diversions will be in place throughout, with businesses remaining accessible.

In October, Cheshire East Council ordered the immediate shutdown of roadworks on Weston Road, following severe traffic disruption and a breach of permit conditions (Photo: Nub News).

In the letter to motorists, EuroGold says:"Please note that one direction only of Weston Road will be closed, detailing the traffic diversion route to be implemented for the duration of these critical infrastructure works."

The upcoming closure follows a chaotic episode in October, when Cheshire East Council ordered an immediate halt to the same project following "severe traffic disruption" and a breach of permit conditions by the utility firm carrying out the works.

That closure began at 8.30am on Monday 20 October, and within hours Crewe's roads were in turmoil. Drivers reported up to 90-minute delays, long tailbacks and almost no advance warning.

EuroGold now insists advance warning signs will be installed at least 14 days before works commence, along with "Businesses Open as Usual" signage once the closure begins.

The company also apologises for the inconvenience, adding: "Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding, and apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause."

Is it me or is that letter incoherent nonsense written by someone with no clue of Crewe roads and no much better with the english language.

It says Weston Road will be closed from the exit of Rookery Wood roundabout, which means inbound to Crewe. But the next section says the diversion route applies to vehicles travelling "towards Weston Road" (which logically means it's on a different road....) "from the Crewe direction" (which is really a negative use of the word direction) "towards David Whitby Way" - which means outbound from Crewe. And the diversion is stated as "Crewe Road and the A5020" - which shows either lazyness or an inablity to read maps and find out the actual name of the A5020, which every one else knows as University Way! It's very unlikely that Business Access points will be maintanined off the diversion, given that it doesn't go near to them!!! The best part of that letter is that it gives a name and two phone numbers, Windows users should right click on it and save a copy for future use.....
