Cheshire East Council ordered the immediate shutdown of roadworks on a major road in Crewe, following severe traffic disruption and a breach of permit conditions by the utility company carrying out the works.

The westbound section of Weston Road, between Weston Road Service Road and the Savoy Road/Weston Road Roundabout, was closed at 8.30am on Monday 20 October, allowing for the installation of a rising main and foul outfall connection linked to developments on David Whitby Way.

However, the closure quickly led to widespread traffic chaos, with motorists complaining of 90-minute delays and a lack of advance warning about the works.

This week, a Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "We are aware of disruption due to a one-way closure along Weston Road in Crewe. These works are being carried out by a utility provider to support developments on David Whitby Way.

"There is never a good time to do works like this, and it's hard to completely avoid disruption to our road network.

"However, because the conditions of the permit for these works have not been followed, we have taken quick action and instructed that the site is closed by the end of today. Thank you for your patience."

The closure had been scheduled to remain in place westbound until Saturday 29 November, but the council's intervention means work will be halted while compliance issues are addressed.

Local drivers expressed frustration on social media, describing gridlocked roads and claiming there had been no clear signage or notification ahead of the closure..

Cheshire East said it will work with the utility provider to ensure future works are properly managed and communicated to minimise disruption.

This is very unfortunate. We are a contractor company specializing in Road surveyance. We are also with the affected in the community. Patience will be tested because of traffic jams, but if a project is well planned it will be smooth all through out. We at https://sonto.com.au/contour-and-detail-survey/, provide detailed surveys that will ease the construction with proper project planning and all.

this may sound mad but the law is (and has been for well over a decade) that highway authorities like CEC are supposed to leave it to the companies,or more usually the traffic management sub-contracters of the companies, to do the signs. A suitable plan is supposed to be submitted to the HA before a permit is issued (except when a contractor forgets, then they bang in an emergency works notice 5 minutes after the permit offices closes and start the work before anyone sees it!). In this case CEC seem to be saying that the contractor did not comply with the plan so they have cancelled the permit. This is actually progress because in the past they wouldnl;t have done anything, does anyone rember a few years ago when Nantwich Road had a confusing one way closure past the station for an entire long bank holiday weekend when the work was only a few hours on Sunday and Monday - and was a repair from the cable explosion years earlier!

Cec only pulled the work to appease and save face, they should have made sure the proper diversion signs were in place and not just relied on the company doing the work, after all they give planning consent
