UK has 'no place' in Iran-US war offensive action, says Crewe MP
By Ryan Parker 2nd Apr 2026
Crewe and Nantwich's MP has spoken out to Nub News on the Iran-US war, urging the UK to avoid offensive military action without a lawful basis or clear strategy.
Connor Naismith stressed any military response should focus on defending UK forces and territory, while also addressing the impact of global tensions on local energy prices and living costs.
The Labour MP underscored the need for careful decision-making in international security and for protecting South Cheshire constituents from rising energy bills caused by global instability.
Mr Naismith told Nub News: "Without a lawful basis or a clear strategy or war aims, the UK has no place in undertaking offensive action in the war in Iran.
"However, when UK military sites have been targeted, the Prime Minister has mobilised forces to defend them. That's the kind of balanced decision-making my constituents expect to see.
"Thankfully, we can only imagine how UK involvement in the conflict would be playing out under different leadership.
"The Conservatives and Reform UK have consistently called on the government to go further and faster into a course of action which is illegal, ill thought through and destabilising the global economy, with knock on effects on the living standards of all of us.
"On the other side, the Greens are calling for the UK to leave NATO altogether and seemed to question whether we should mobilise our forces to defend British territory and citizens.

"This tells me everything I need to know about whether they can be trusted to handle matters of international security.
"I know residents of Crewe and Nantwich are worried about rising bills.
"Now more than ever, the government is right to focus on the transition away from global oil and gas markets, and towards home grown, renewable energy as well as nuclear power to provide greater energy security against external shocks.
"But we must also protect the most vulnerable in real-time, and I am confident the Chancellor will stay true to her word to protect those who need it most if energy bills rise because of the conflict.
"While I acknowledge that universal support with energy bills would be wrong and unaffordable, I want to be clear that in my view that support must extend beyond the very poorest in society and that it must reach those on middle incomes.
"I also understand that constituents will be concerned about the rising cost of fuel. Fuel duty is currently frozen until September, and I know the government is already looking at whether further support is necessary.
"If anyone has specific concerns about their energy bills or fuel prices, I encourage them to get in touch with my office."
