A Crewe beer-maker has bagged two awards in the same month. Just days after they celebrated their fifth-birthday.

Tom's Tap and Brewhouse, of Thomas Street, has become the holder of two prestigious beer festival prizes.

The Crewe-based brewery made their mark at Chester Real Ale and Cider Festival, where Chester and South Clwyd CAMRA gave their "Dark Mild" joint first place.

This was swiftly followed up by a second award.

The Chorlton Beer Festival awarded the local brewer 'Overall Beer Of The Festival', in collaboration with Manchester's Blackjack Brewery, with 'Ey Up Treacle' a 'Foreign Extra Stout'.

The small craft brewery was up against some fierce competition, but the excellence of its products was recognised by the judges.

Head Brewer, and co-owner of the company, Sean Ayling said "I've always known our beer is decent, but it has taken a while for it to make it into festivals in cask".

Sean also took on the responsibility of training another brewer Robert "Chad" Chadwick, who is now a respected brewer in his own right.

"At the time, I could barely afford to pay myself much less anyone else," recalled Sean.

"But Chad was very keen to learn as much as I could teach him, and he volunteered for just over a year before we took him on full time".

When asked about the future of the brewery Sean said "I am always motivated to consistently develop and improve our beer. My definition of a good beer is layers of flavour if I'm drinking a stout, thirst quenching drinkability in a pale or a lager."

The awards double-swoop comes just a month after their five year anniversary.
