Former mayor of the old borough of Crewe and Nantwich, Ray Stafford MBE has sadly died, with Nub News paying tribute.

Alderman Ray Stafford MBE was the mayor of the old borough of Crewe and Nantwich between 1998 and 1999.

From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, Ray served the Crewe community as an on-call firefighter.

Ray also served Crewe District Youth Centre, Mirion Street, as a volunteer for 47 years between 1965 and 2012.

From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, Ray Stafford MBE served the Crewe community as an on-call firefighter (Crewe Fire Station).

In 2009, the Crewe and Nantwich advocate was awarded an MBE for his services to the community and his charity work.

Mayor of Crewe, Cllr Dawn Clark, said: "Ray was a true gentleman, known for his tireless work as a Councillor championing Youth and Sports projects.

"He supported many charities, such as Crewe Rotary, Parkinsons UK and Diabetes UK.

"Ray was well-respected amongst fellow Aldermen and Councillors. This is a very sad passing for Crewe."

The former borough mayor's funeral will be held on Thursday 6 February at 11.30am at Crewe Crematorium.

Family flowers only, with donations to be made to Belong Crewe and Telford Court.
