Storm Chandra: Rail delays and cancellations between Crewe and Manchester

Local News by Ryan Parker 27th Jan 2026   2

Passengers travelling between Crewe and Manchester are experiencing delays and cancellations on Tuesday 27 January.

This is due to a fallen tree which has blocked the lines between Wilmslow and Crewe.

There has also been a failure of the electricity supply.

As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes, diverted or revised.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Some trains are now running, Northern getting back up to speed, Avanti depends on where the trains was when they got the go ahead, TfW still delayed by floods but might go through to Manchester eventually. Only one track open betwen Goostrey and Chelford which would cause congestion if everything did run.

the problem with relying on National Rail media sources for specific info is that it is written by the sort of people who normally communicate in emojis and initials. And have little knowledge of railway geography. The problems at Crewe are more complicated than their overgeneralised summary.
1. Nothing more than an odd bus is running to/from Wilmslow.
2. The problem affects trains going to other place, such as LONDON. Those Avanti Manchester -London trains that are running are cancelled as far as Crewe is concerned. And same for people coimg from London to Crewe.

3. The Welsh fast trains are totally screwed by flooding in Wales so even if this problem hadn't happened they may not have gone to Manchester. And they are getting delayed going to Cardiff.
4. There are simple ways to get to Manchester if you really need to but Avanti can't be bothered to explain and Northern haven't knowledge. But try Warrington or Kidsgrove.
5. If you are going to the airport don't sit around hoping it will get better, find a minicab now!
The latest news is that one track now is cleared and a diesel freight train has managed to get through . So there's a reasonable chance it might all be open and electricty restored by tomorrow.
