A "unique and quirky" corner pub in Crewe continues to offer locals of all ages a place to enjoy competitively priced drinks, in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Operated by Licensee, Jackie Halden, from Crewe, who has run the pub since 2018, expressed her delight at coming fourth in Crewe Nub News' best pubs in town poll for 2026 with 69 votes.

Dating back to the 1870s, The Earle of Chester is made up of a bar area, lounge, pool room, raised area and a rear beer garden, including two darts boards, five TV screens, a jukebox and stage.

Jackie told Nub News: "The Earle of Chester is a unique and quirky pub with cheap drinks. We are always open and always welcoming. The venue is also surprisingly spacious to what it looks like from the outside.

"I have run this free house since 2018. I love being my own boss and like to listen to our customer's suggestions where possible.

"Knowing Nub News was coming, I asked my customers, who are of all ages, why they like coming in here.

"They said because it's an old-fashioned boozer, it's welcoming, staff are friendly, they like the free jukebox, cheap pool games, it's a family environment and everyone is friendly and chatty.

"They also said they like that we do darts, show live sports (both Sky Sports and TNT Sports), host karaoke nights, host Christmas parties for both adults and kids, along with our competitive drink prices.

"We are in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide and have been for the last three years running. Our drinks selection is the run-of-the mill range like Stella, Carling and Magners, as well as offering local real ales.

"The decor is very rock music-orientated which is my personal preference. Some of the music items are from The Limelight where I worked at as a Bar Manager in the 90s and 2000s.

"Prior to this, I ran The Hop Pole for 12 years. Things got a bit too hard in terms of what the pub company were asking for so I moved on and soon came to The Earle of Chester.

"I was a bit skeptical about here at first, but it has been a great success. I love the venue and my customers and hope for many years to come."

Jackie, who worked at Crewe's much-loved old Limelight Club, Hightown, from 1998 to 2006, enjoys hosting fundraising activities and welcoming new people to the venue.

With a capacity of over 100 people, The Earle of Chester is made up of a bar area, pool room, lounge, raised area and a rear beer garden, with two darts boards, five TV screens, a jukebox and stage (Photo: Ryan Parker).

The ex-Limelight Bar Manager said: "In the day time, a lot of people like to come in to The Earle of Chester for a chat and to watch the news, which is a very peaceful vibe. At teatime, we get a lot of workers coming in for a pint.

"During the evening, we get a lot of young ones in, who used to go to other venues but now see us as their local.

"We host a pub quiz on Wednesdays, do karaoke nights every other Saturday and have a men's darts team on Mondays, with a ladies darts team on Tuesdays. We also have two pool teams on a Sunday.

"On June 13, we are doing a 70s live music night, encouraging fancy dress. The best dressed will win a prize.

"As well as this, we do fundraising for the likes of Macmillan and St Luke's Hospice. I like to raise money for our customers when they need our support.

"My favourite thing about The Earle of Chester is our lovely customers, it's just so friendly. People can walk in who have never been in before and our regulars will chat to them and make them feel at home."

With a capacity of 100 people, The Earle of Chester is open 1pm to 11pm, Monday to Sunday.
