Supermarket giant exploring potential of opening in new residential area of Crewe

A major British supermarket chain is looking at potentially opening on the outskirts of Crewe, over three years after closing its only shop in the town.
Sainsbury's, operating over 850 convenience stores and 600 supermarkets across the UK, shuttered its 'Local' store on Edleston Road in March 2022.
The multi-channel retailer, which operates a superstore on Middlewich Road, Nantwich (two miles from Crewe), was recently asked by Nub News if it would consider opening in Crewe town centre.

Despite rejecting this proposal, Sainsbury's said it is looking at opening in a new residential area of the town.
A Sainsbury's spokesperson told Nub News: "Unfortunately we have no requirement for a new convenience store in Crewe town centre.
"The town centre and periphery is already extremely competitive with Asda, Morrisons and Tesco all having large supermarkets nearby.
"There are a number of areas of new housing we are focusing on however."
Back in 2009, a Sainsbury's store was approved by Cheshire East Council for the units now occupied by Dunelm Mill and Home Bargains off Vernon Way.

The 60,000 square foot supermarket that was to include a petrol station and restaurant, never materialised as Dunelm Mill refused to leave the site.
Sainsbury's is the only one of the 'big six' supermarkets not to have a presence in Crewe.
