The Stroke Survivors Speech & Language Support Group in Crewe launched in 2018.

A vital Stroke Survivors Speech & Language Support Group in Crewe is celebrating its fourth anniversary this year - expanding to a new location next month.

The Group is based at Union Street Baptist Church on Union Street in Crewe (Tuesdays, 11am), helping stroke survivors in Cheshire East and surrounding areas with speech, language and communication difficulties.

It also aims to help the stroke survivors gain more contact with others, clearing them of their social isolation in a friendly and relaxed setting.

A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.

The Sroke Survivors Speech & Language Support Group is based at Union Street Baptist Church, Union Street, Crewe (Union Street Baptist Church).

Liz Bedson, Founder of Stroke Survivors Speech & Language Support Group, said: "I founded the group four years ago, after my father survived a stroke in 2016.

"The stroke mainly affected his speech language and communication and there wasn't anything for him after he left his rehabilitation. The Stroke Association did have a small group to help stroke survivors with their speech, but funding got withdrawn so I decided I'd start the Group up.

"We are a constituted, voluntary group who support Stroke Survivors with speech, language and communication difficulties with fun and engaging activities to help survivors with their difficulties.

"Often our members feel isolated, lose their confidence and self-esteem after surviving a stroke but we are there to help them regain it."

The group meet at the Union Street church in Crewe on Tuesdays (Jonathan White).

Stroke Survivors Speech & Language Support Group are also opening a new support service at The Thirteen Club in Alsager on Thursdays (10.30am) from 5th May 2022.

Mrs Bedson added: "We are very inclusive and are person-centred, meaning that we treat everyone as an individual.

"We encourage individuals to take part in our sessions in whichever way that suits them, through speak, writing and communication books.

"We also pride ourselves with our care, attention and professionalism and all volunteers are DBS checked. We enjoy trips out, previous trips include a trip on the Anderton Boat Lift with fish and chip lunch, Titanic Brewery, afternoon teas, quizzes, theatre trips etc.

"All through Covid lockdown we kept in contact with our members through regular phone calls, distanced visits with treats to try and reduce the amount of social isolation.

A new support group launches in Alsager on May 5 (Jonathan White).

Stroke Survivors Speech & Language Support Group always welcome new members.

The support group website says: "By providing a relaxing environment, with peer support and practical tools to develop new ways of communicating, we will help to rebuild their confidence and reduce their vulnerability.

"We aim for them to feel that they matter and are valued members of our community."

Sessions run in six-week blocks, then have two weeks off.
