A woman has made a remarkable recovery after spending six months in hospital and rehabilitation, with support from a Crewe and Nantwich home care team.

Christine was born with cerebral palsy and has always been determined not to let it limit her independence.

Until a couple of years ago, she was still driving and enjoying an independent lifestyle.

SureCare Central Cheshire began caring for Christine in November 2025 after she spent six months in hospitals and rehabilitation.

During this time, she underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour from behind her right ear at Salford Royal Hospital.

Following the surgery, Christine was fully reliant on a hoist and two carers.

Working alongside occupational therapists (OTs), the SureCare team helped Christine set manageable goals and gradually rebuild her strength.

She began practising her sitting balance, with carers assessing her each day to make sure she was strong enough to complete the exercises.

Her motivation saw her progress from practising a couple of times a week to sitting in her chair for an hour each day by the start of January.

By July, she was strong enough to sit in the chair all day.

Another major milestone came when Christine began using a piece of equipment called a Mo Lift for transfers.

Rather than using a full-body hoist, the equipment allows a person to stand with assistance and move between areas such as a bed and chair.

In April, Christine also took her first steps.

Again working with the OTs, she began walking tentatively before gradually building up her strength.

She can now walk the length of her hall and kitchen with two people supervising her.

The return of the hoist was a major cause for celebration for everyone involved in her care.

Christine has also made significant progress with eating and drinking.

Following her surgery, she was fed directly into her stomach through a PEG tube.

Working with speech and language therapists and dieticians, Christine began drinking fluids and eating pureed food in April.

She has since progressed to eating full meals and enjoying different flavours and textures.

Her next goal is to have the PEG tube removed.

Registered Manager for SureCare Central Cheshire, Sarah Castelow, said: "Seeing someone with such a great personality and love for life coming out of hospital unable to walk or eat by herself achieving what Christine has achieved is incredible.

"This is why we support people at home.

"Christine has always lived in the same house, it was her family home so she has a very strong connection with it and doesn't want to leave.

"We are so pleased that we are able to help her with her wishes to live at home."

Carer, Jo Steele-Dixon, said: "Christine is very cheeky and was always trying to convince us to give her food and drink as she was so desperate to enjoy her food again.

"We obviously stuck to the care plan and worked with other professionals to achieve her aims in a safe way.

"It's such a treat caring for Christine and I always leave her home smiling."

SureCare Central Cheshire provides home care across South Cheshire, supporting people with everything from getting up and going to bed, medication and meal preparation to companionship, appointments and day trips.

The company also provides specialist support including dementia care, catheter care, stoma support and PEG feeds, alongside night care and live-in care.

Christine said: "I didn't want to stay in hospital. I was missing my home and my partner Harry.

"Now that I have built up my strength again we can sit together and enjoy our favourite programmes, we really enjoy Bargain Hunt."

Her next goals are to go upstairs and sleep in her own bed and build up enough strength to feed herself so she can eat a meal with Harry.

"I enjoy the time with all the carers that visit, they are all worth their weight in gold.

"I like all the conversations I have with the carers, they help to keep me connected with the community and what is going on where I live.

"I really enjoy making all the carers laugh."
