Crewe Heritage Centre will step back in time as its 1940s Weekend brings wartime music, dancing, re-enactments and steam power to the town.

The two-day event takes place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, from 10am, celebrating the centre's Crewe at War exhibition and the town's important role in Britain's Second World War effort.

The exhibition hall will be transformed with live music, vintage entertainment, historical re-enactments, family activities and 1940s-themed attractions.

Visitors can see Kyle Evans performing as George Formby, while Lancashire Belle will perform wartime and vintage favourites.

Winston and Clementine Churchill re-enactors will also be at the event, while Severnside Lindy will run Lindy Hop dance sessions across the weekend.

A special talk will take place on Saturday by local author and Second World War historian Mark Potts.

His one-hour presentation will examine the impact of the Blitz on Crewe, including why the town became a target because of its strategically important railway network and factories producing vital war materials.

The talk will feature historic photographs showing bomb damage across Crewe, comparisons with the same locations today and first-hand accounts from local people who experienced the air raids.

Families can also take part in traditional 1940s games, explore the Crewe at War exhibition and discover more about the town's contribution to the war effort.

On Sunday, a visiting steam locomotive will operate on the centre's miniature railway, adding another piece of living history to the weekend.

There will also be refreshments from Becky's Bakes, serving homemade cakes and sweet treats, alongside hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and light bites from the Crewe Heritage Canteen.

Visitors can also browse the Crewe Heritage Centre gift shop for books, toys, gifts and souvenirs.

1940s dress is encouraged, with visitors invited to come as RAF pilots, land girls, factory workers, evacuees or in other wartime outfits.

Crewe Heritage Centre manager, Edmea Gori, said: "Crewe played a vital role in Britain's wartime story, and our 1940s Weekend is a chance for visitors to discover that history in a fun and engaging way.

"From music and dancing to historical talks, re-enactors and a steam train, there's something for every generation to enjoy."

Advance tickets cost £10 through Eventbrite, compared with £12 on the gate. Children go free.
