A new escape room and axe throwing entertainment venue is set to open in Crewe town centre this April, following months of anticipation.

Mystery Quest Escape Rooms and Entertainment Venues will be launching inside Crewe Central, Lyceum Square on Saturday 12 April.

Operated by Chris Gillies and his partner Amber, the family-run business has successfully operated a site in Kent for almost six years.

Mystery Quest is opening with support from the Open in Crewe scheme, offering capital grants of up to £30,000 for businesses taking on leases on vacant town premises (Mystery Quest).

Mystery Quest will initially launch with two escape rooms, with a two-lane axe throwing game set to open this summer. More escape rooms will also open at a later date.

The new entertainment experience is opening with support from the Open in Crewe scheme, offering capital grants of up to £30,000 for businesses taking on leases on vacant town premises.

Mr Gillies told Nub News: "We were hoping to open in Crewe at the end of October/beginning of November but faced delays due to issues with heating the venue.

"This is a massive space and we will open up with two escape rooms to start with. Over time, we will build that up to five or six games.

"We are also putting in a two-lane axe throwing game where we will be doing league nights. This should be ready for the summer.

"In the interim, as we will have a lot of open space, there will be a selfie factory, including giant inflatable monsters, bath tubs with balls in, giant bird cages and more.

"Mystery Quests is already an established business. We launched in Kent in 2019 and are a multi award-winning escape room company.

Operated by Chris Gillies and his partner Amber, Mystery Quest has successfully operated a site in Kent for around six years (Ryan Parker).

"One of our games, Mr. Todds, was rated one of the top 100 games in the UK. Launching in Crewe is about replicating that same successful system here.

"We were approached by Crewe Market Hall to open in Crewe Central. The manager, Stewart, is a huge escape room enthusiast.

"After driving up to Crewe and taking a look at this unit, we were excited to open in the town centre."

Mystery Quest will become the second escape room centre in Crewe, following the launch of Tenpin entertainment centre on Phoenix Leisure Park in February 2023.

Mr Gillies said: "There is the multi-chain Houdini's Escape Room Experience at Tenpin, but the independents, like us, spend more time building escape room games.

Mystery Quest will initially open in Crewe every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with a view to opening in mid-week at a later date (Ryan Parker).

"We aim to be the biggest leisure and entertainment centre in Crewe. There is a lot of work to do and we will get there."

Mr Gillies confirmed to Nub News what escape rooms Mystery Quest will be starting with in Crewe.

He said: "A lot of our escape rooms have already been built off-site. We will be opening with 'Hillbilly Living' and 'Antidote', which is a virus game.

"After that, escape rooms will be Arctic exploration game 'Frozen,' split-start prison escape, 'Cellmates' and race against time 'Gold Rush,' where stealth is golden."

The Kennel Bar, operated by The Crewe Dog, will be remaining in Crewe Central. How this arrangement will work is yet to be confirmed.
