A "proud" Crewe couple have opened a new coffee house in the town centre, also serving a variety of home-baked cakes and sandwiches.

Big Mugs, Edleston Road, officially launched at 9am on Friday 22 November, following a soft launch in the days prior.

Operated by Laura Donaldson and Josh Wenlock from Crewe, Big Mugs seats around 30 people and is dog-friendly.

Josh told Nub News: "We have been having a good time getting everything sorted. It has taken three months to get Big Mugs up and running after getting the keys in September.

"Laura has been working in the coffee industry for a while. She has been a barista three times and the general manager of a coffee shop just before this too.

"With that experience there was no doubt Laura could run her own coffee house, and I was previously a general manager at Crewe's Holiday Inn (Now Belvilla).

"It has always been Laura and I's dream to strike out and do something a bit different.

"Our skills have come together to run Big Mugs. The whole interior design is Laura's idea and it looks perfect. We are really proud of everything.

"We are really proud of our coffees, which is Cherry Red Coffee, which comes from Glebe Farm in Congleton. It is really good stuff.

"Here, were we will sell home-baked cakes, paninis, ciabatta sandwiches, teacakes, croissants and more. We also offer board games for everyone to enjoy.

"Our aim is to make Big Mugs a cosy and inviting coffee house to visit."

Big Mugs has benefitted from the Open in Crewe scheme, offering capital grants of up to £30,000 for businesses taking on leases on vacant town premises.

Laura and Josh said: "We were browsing for units and as we were doing that we ran into the Open in Crewe scheme.

'This area in classed as Crewe town centre within the scheme and the rent rates are a lot cheaper.

"A lot of new businesses opening up on this row have seized on the opportunity to get funds to help- open their places up.

"This street is doing really well now, with the Open in Crewe scheme a lot to thank for that."

Big Mugs is offering 50 per cent off its hot drinks for its launch day (November 22), with its full menu to come the following week (November 25).

Laura and Josh added: "Our tagline is 'coffee with heart.' We are independent and offer a place for people to chill out for an hour or two.

"At the rear end of our shop, we have got a room for event hire. This can be for book clubs and business meetings for example.

"From just £10 an hour, this is a private room where customers can enjoy our coffees, sandwiches, cakes and the likes.

"We will be expanding our sandwich and panini menu, including more vegan options from next week.
