Residents protest about 'confusing' traffic plans for Shavington housing scheme

RESIDENTS in Shavington are fighting proposed changes to a road outside their homes which are part of a new housing development.

Magenta Living's scheme for 45 properties at the rear of The Elephant public house requires a Grampian order for alterations to Main Road.

It includes a Traffic Regulation Order on a section of the road, which would see the entrance to the development and the pub becoming one-way to traffic.

Under a condition attached to the approval, the developer cannot start building until the order is in place.

But residents on Main Road have raised objections to Cheshire East Council, saying the proposals are "unsafe, unfair, and not a sensible solution for pedestrians, all road users and residents".

Residents are concerned that little thought has been given to wheelchair users, children and the elderly as well as cyclists.

They believe it will put "immense pressure" on roads in and around the village and state: "There are real concerns regarding the parking of cars belonging to visitors, carers, nursing and medical personnel visiting the more vulnerable residents of Main Road."

Cheshire East Council has approved a revised highways plan at the site, which is being developed by Magenta, in partnership with MCI Developments, as an estate of one, two and three-bedroom homes.

After residents objected to the initial plans to convert Main Road into a one-way street, the developers lodged the updated plan, involving the widening of pavements along Main Road.

Highways officers say the curb changes would give pedestrians more space and be a traffic calming measure.

But residents are hoping more people will join them in raising objections to the order and are asking people to email at [email protected] or by post to Mr R. Welch, Cheshire East Highways, Municipal Buildings, Earle Street, Crewe CW1 2BJ by tomorrow (Wednesday).

You can see the planning application for the housing here.
