Local bus users will now travel into Crewe Bus Station from a different way - following the start of further demolition works for the town centre development.

As of Monday (May 16), buses coming into Crewe Bus Station from 'Crewe North,' will enter from Delamere Street instead of Victoria Street.

Buses that have come from the West Street side of town in to the bus station have always gone through Hightown, on to Victoria Street and then in to the bus station.

Now, buses will go from Hightown to St Mary's Street, left on to Delamere Street and then left in to Tower Way through to the bus station.

When buses exit the station towards West Street, they will exit on to Charles Street and then Victoria Street.

Two-way access for the buses will still be in place on Delamere Street. Bus timetables are also not affected.

Yesterday (May 17), Nub News travelled on the 31 Northwich to Crewe bus into town to see the new route.

A Crewe resident of Cliffe Road on the bus said: "Why are we going this way? The bus never usually goes this way."

Cheshire East Council has confirmed that archeological investigations have been taking place at the junctions of Charles Street and Victoria Street for a number of weeks. They ended at the end of last week. (May 13).

This was a part of the planning requirements for the site, common for the construction of new developments.

The council say that further archeological investigation works are planned for more locations around the Royal Arcade site in the upcoming weeks.

Now, the focus is on soft 'strip out' works for the existing derelict bus garages.

The works began at the start of May in preparation for the demolition of the entire area.

This comes after all trees were cut down around the bus station and garages in March - two months behind schedule.

Crewe's new bus interchange is expected to be completed by the late summer of 2023 alongside a multi-storey car park.

Last month, Cheshire East Council told Nub News that it was committed to keeping an operational bus station on the site throughout all phases of demolition and construction of the scheme's first phase.

Planning permission was granted for phase one of the £48 million scheme in September 2021.

At this time, outline permission was also granted for the leisure part of the project - hoped to be completed by the end of 2025.
