The four rotary clubs of South Cheshire have come together to obtain two Rotary Foundation Grants - supporting Ukrainian families being accommodated by Crewe and Nantwich residents.
A Rotary Grant of £2,000 has been used to cover the cost of 100 Welcome Packs for Ukrainian women and children who are arriving in the UK with next to nothing.
The Welcome Packs contain toiletries, cosmetics, female hygiene and baby products.
They have been created in a collaboration between the Rotary Clubs and Supported Community Business, a Crewe based training organisation for young adults with learning disabilities.
Rotary clubs members all believe they have a responsibility to take action on the world's most pressing concerns.
The four local rotary clubs are The Rotary Club of Crewe, Crewe and Nantwich Weaver, Nantwich and Wych-Malbank.
A second Rotary Grant of £2,500 is proposed so that Motherwell, the local charity supporting women can provide a practical befriending/ mentoring service to Ukrainian women and help them integrate into the local community.
At the first meeting Motherwell will provide a Wellbeing Bag and then organise for a trained mentor to meet with twenty women once a week for up to 12 weeks.
President Elect Diane Yates of the Rotary Club of Crewe and Nantwich Weaver said: "The four rotary clubs in the area have moved rapidly to take advantage of the Rotary grants available to support our Ukrainian friends.
"Particularly as it enables us to respond to the urgent need for disaster relief and to empower women."
The Rotary Club of Crewe & Nantwich Weaver also staged its twelfth annual classic & sports car rally, the 'Weaver Wander,' on Saturday (May 14).
More than 150 cars assembled on the Hankelow village green - by the newly refurbished White Lion pub, Hankelow.
At 10am, the cars were set off in the sunshine by Rotary Club President, Geoff Watts, embarking on three separate routes through the countryside in Cheshire, the Staffordshire moorlands, Shropshire & into Wales.
All routes brought the cars back them to their final destination at Hankelow Hall.
The spectators were able to view a wide variety of cars, including the following car makers: Healey, Ferrari, Austin, Ford, Jaguar, Lotus, MG, Porsche, Morgan, Triumph, Honda, Mazda, Mini, Audi, Lancia, Mercedes, an AC Cobra, Alvis, RollsRoyce, and Bentley.
The participants in the Weaver Wander were all competing for three trophies: The Fred Bowers trophy for 'Best Car,' The Melvyn Reynolds trophy for the 'Best Spirit of the Event' and the President's trophy for 'Best Club Presentation.'
Event Organiser Ian Thompson said: "The newly refurbished White Lion in Hankelow coupled with the idyllic village green was ideal for the start of this year's event.
"Hankelow Hall again proved to be a very popular destination for the 'Wander' and no doubt the fine weather allowed everybody to really enjoy a great day out in their classic cars."
The Crewe and Nantwich Weaver Rotary Club was supported in delivering the event by CHANCE 'Changing Lives,' the Cheshire Stretch Tents company.
It was grateful to Kirk & Beverley Shenton, the owners of Hankelow Hall, for allowing the event to be staged in their 'beautiful' gardens.
The Weaver Wander is one of the Rotary Club's main fund-raising events and is regularly backed several local companies.
Approximately £4,000 was raised on the day all of which will be donated to CHANCE, Riding for the Disabled Association, The Trussell Trust, YMCA Crewe and other local Rotary Club charities.
