Road closed after sinkhole opens up by former Crewe town centre pub

An emergency road closure is in place on a Crewe town centre street, after a sinkhole suddenly opened up next to a former pub.

The sinkhole emerged on John Street, off Victoria Street, on Friday 9 February, adjacent to The Victoria pub.

This pub permanently closed in 2014, with a cellar known to be under the affected stretch of road.

A Cheshire East Highways statement read: "An emergency road closure is currently in place on John Street, Junction with Victoria Street.

"This is to facilitate emergency carriageway repairs. Plan your journey ahead."

John Street is currently expected to reopen on Saturday 24 February.
