Cash-strapped Cheshire East has confirmed it is in talks with unions and staff over possible job losses as part of its restructuring programme.

The council, like many local authorities, has had to rely on exceptional financial support to balance its books over the past couple of years and is currently looking at ways to transform and restructure.

On Friday, June 12, a spokesperson confirmed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service that redundancies, while a last resort, are likely.

The council has not said how many jobs will go.

A Cheshire East spokesperson said: "The council is currently undertaking a formal consultation on restructure proposals for our customer experience, revenues and benefits services. No final decisions have been made.

"The council's medium term financial strategy – approved by council in February 2026 – includes savings related to the transformation of our resources directorate.

"We will continue to engage with trade unions and staff and support them throughout the consultation process."

He added: "We are working in line with our change policy and legal requirements, and have issued a section 188 notice as there are likely to be redundancies arising from this review. As always, redundancy remains a last resort.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time, as we do not wish to predetermine the outcome."

What will happen to all the dish washers that were bought recently,
Another waste of rate payers money.
For people that wonder what I'm on about,
Cheshire east bought a number of brand new dishwashers recently for the staff to use.

And in the meantime, the search for a new chief executive goes on, despite the recruitment ban announced a few months ago. Obviously, these rules don't apply to the big people, just the little people who do the work.

Not surprising the amount they have been paying out in sick pay.
