Crewe town centre is being transformed with a series of colourful permanent murals, as artists bring their work to the streets as part of a new festival.

The CreweColours Street Art Festival, delivered by CreweCreates, is running from October 26 to November 1, with six new murals being created across the town centre.

Artists from around the UK and beyond have been working at locations including Lyceum Square, Heath Street and the Victoria Centre.

Lyceum Square is at the heart of the project, with five large murals bringing a variety of artistic styles to the area.

The designs include an industrial train called 'The Duchess,' referencing Crewe's railway heritage, a black circus performer depicted off-stage, floral patterns inspired by classic church architecture, an eagle and hand-painted fine art.

Crewe's new temporary park is having cartoon-style characters put on feeder pillars, with The Victoria Centre, owned by Asda, also receiving attention as part of the wider improvements.

The shopping centre has been cleaned up and new benches installed, with new art murals also set to be painted across its walls as part of the festival.

Co-director of CreweCreates, Jamie Chalmers, who runs Platform art gallery (former Burtons/Dorothy Perkins), told Nub News: "The caliber of work fetched in for this street art project is rare and bloody beautiful.

"What's been really nice so far is seeing people coming out of the pub and just watching beautiful things emerge.

"Over the weekend, we're going to have nine boards set up within Lyceum Square with nine artists, all finishing at the same time alongside live DJs playing to put good vibes in the air.

"We have five main murals right across Lyceum Square, creating a fantastic epicenter.

"The pieces feature a huge variety of styles, including an industrial train design called 'The Duchess,' referencing local heritage, a black circus performer depicted off-stage, floral patterns based on classic church architecture, an eagle, and hand-painted fine art pieces on surrounding walls.

"The art murals extend beyond the boards into the nearby space, including custom designs painted on feeder pillars in Crewe town centre's new 'meanwhile space.'

"These feature fun, cartoon-style characters designed to tie in with local heritage, such as train drivers and railway workers from the 1920s, while matching the overarching colour scheme and vibrancy of the main street art pieces."

The CreweColours Street Art Festival will conclude this weekend with a live paint jam in Lyceum Square on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November 1.

Visitors will be able to watch the artwork take shape and see the artists creating their pieces up close.

Jamie added: "To be able to come here and see this many murals in such a short space will be interesting to watch over time, making people want to come and have a look.

"This is the first festival we've done, and these art murals will remain looking good for five to ten years.

"The plan moving forward is to secure more funding to expand the festival outwards across the town in future years.

"Putting street art in key locations gives people an added reason to visit, brings culture to the area, and transforms how people feel about the town through art, food, and music."

The murals are expected to remain in place for between five and ten years, with CreweCreates hoping to secure further funding to expand the festival into more parts of the town year-on-year.

The project aims to bring more visitors into Crewe town centre, while giving public spaces a lasting splash of colour and creativity.
