A popular doughnut shop chain located in a South Cheshire town centre has announced its permanent closure - just over 18 months after opening.

On Monday (May 22), Planet Doughnut announced it would be closing its Pillory Street, Nantwich store, on Sunday 28 May.

The family-owned doughnut and coffee shop opened its first ever South Cheshire store in late October, 2021.

Planet Doughnut opened its first ever South Cheshire store in late October, 2021 (Planet Doughnut).

Established in 2017, by husband-and-wife team, Duncan and Samantha McGregor - Planet Doughnut has nine other stores.

Mr McGregor announced the Nantwich closure with a social media statement - blaming it on the cost of living crisis and "reduced high street footfall."

The owner said: "I was hoping we wouldn't have to post this but we've been unable to make our Nantwich shop work out.

"Sadly will be closing the doors on Sunday night, 28 May, for the last time.

Planet Doughnut has been operated by husband-and-wife team, Duncan and Samantha McGregor, since 2017 (Planet Doughnut).

"Please come in and see us in our last week if you can, we will be doing some deals to get rid of excess dessert stock and use up the coffee and hot chocolate.

"We gave it our best shot but the crippling cost of electricity prices, the cost of living crisis, reduced high street footfall, coupled by the fact in essence our "bread and butter" is a handmade artisan doughnut we just couldn't keep absorbing the losses here.

"Thank you Nantwich for making us feel so welcome, and if anyone is looking for fridges, freezers, and café related stuff drop me a PM – I have a number of items to sell."

Planet Doughnut still operates stores in Chester, Lichfield, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Rugeley, Shrewsbury, St Helens, Telford, Warrington and Widnes.

Crewe Nub News has asked Planet Doughnut if it would consider opening in the town - following its Nantwich closure (Nantwich Christie Hospital Support Group).

It currently provides doughnuts to a number of food outlets in Crewe.
