Former Crewe councillor borough mayor and local historian passes away aged 87

A former local councillor, mayor for the borough of Crewe and Nantwich, local historian and Honorary Alderman - has sadly died aged 87.

Mr Howard Curran passed away on Monday (August 15) - peacefully in the care of Leighton Hospital.

Howard was the beloved husband of Sheila, and a much loved dad of David and Christopher - he was also a cherished grandad and friend.

He represented the St. Barnabas Crewe ward for many years and committed his life to the community.

Howard Curran committed his life to the community - publishing three Crewe books (Crewe Nub News).

Howard Curran's Remarkable Life:

Howard was born, educated and spent his entire working life in Crewe.

He was the Mayor for the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich from 2006 to 2007. He was a well-known local historian and author.

Howard's contribution to the local history scene in Crewe was prolific, especially regarding the history of Queens Park which was a favourite subject of his.  

Over 40 years ago, Howard became interested in local history and, using his acquired knowledge, was able to give scores of working class illustrated lectures on Crewe.

This helped raise over £30,000 for national and local charities. 

It was in 1988, that Howard became a Councillor for Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council.

Howard Curran's thirdand final book was called 'Queens Park Crewe: History, Myths and Legend.' (Crewe Nub News).

Then from 2002 until 2006 he became Queens Park's 'Port-Folio' holder on the Council's Board.

Howard held this post until he became the Mayor of the Borough in 2006. 

As an author, Howard published three books in his Crewe town trilogy.

All of them related to Crewe and its history - tracing its changes and development:

Mr Curran's first book was 'Crewe Pubs (Images of England)' published in 2004, with his second titled: 'Crewe: The Twentieth Century' - published in 2012.

His third and final book was called 'Queens Park Crewe: History, Myths and Legends' - released in 2021.

Howard's funeral is taking place at St Barnabas Church, West Street at noon on Thursday - August 25 (Google).

This will be followed by a burial in Crewe's Meadow Brook Cemetery, off Minshull New Road.
